Traveling to Cuba in May of 2003 has been the apex of my photography/travel experience thus far. Though it is just the beginning of what I hope will be a lifetime adventure, Cuba could not have been a more ideal setting. Shrouded in a veil of mystery to most United States citizens, Cuba was where I wanted to go, simply because I knew it would be a challenge for me to get there. What I hoped to accomplish involved learning what life was like there and capturing that essence on film. Though you will see some old American cars in my photos (they are everywhere), it was not my intention to capture the stereotypical "Cuban" image that perpetuates American's perceptions of what Cuba is, but instead to offer a window into a Cuban way of life. There is no other place on earth like Cuba. Existing in almost a vacuum of time, Cuba is torn between the politics at home and the advancing world that exists all around them, slightly out of reach.

I hope that with these images viewers will gain a new understanding and perhaps some insight into what life in Cuba is really like; whether it be exuberant or sorrowful, organized or chaotic, hopeful or resigned, or that quintessentially Cuban combination of both.
